    In the echo of a storm just passed, a child finds joy splashing through puddles in a worn-down playground, unaware of a tortoise struggling on its back nearby. When the gaze of an elderly figure draws the attention of the child toward the helpless animal, the child’s innocence is questioned. Exploring how our anxiety comes from expectation as much as reality, Australian-Canadian visual artist Mawrgan Shaw combines agitated drawings with restrained watercolour in this animated short film.

    Mawrgan Shaw

    Mawrgan Shaw is an Australian-Canadian visual artist and independent animator whose work explores the relationship between personal identity and physical reality. Using traditional and digital media, Mawrgan examines themes of empathy and connection, focusing on how we move through and make meaning in the world. Mawrgan’s previous animated short Forgotten was nominated for Best Animation at the St Kilda Film Festival (2022) and selected for the Best of the OIAF Canadian showcase at the Ottawa International Animation Festival (2021).
